Extreme weather. Global pandemic. Unique site constraints.
Just another day at the office for WDS Construction, as we successfully breathed new life into the 1976-era Coastland Center in Naples, FL.
This multi-faceted project initially entailed demolition of a 171,000 sq. ft. former Sears department store and construction of a 10,000 sq. ft. endcap on the existing retail center. WDS Construction also provided 365,000 sq. ft. of site improvements, including five pads for future development, new parking, and hardscape improvements. The majority of the new parking areas (80-85%) utilize underground water retention. Phased asbestos removal was also provided.
Included within the project is the latest in creating a movie-going experience, the CMX CinéBistro Coastland. WDS Construction was tasked with bringing this innovative dinner-and-a-movie experience to life at the Coastland Center. The new 38,000 sq. ft. entertainment complex features six theaters with oversize recliners and the latest in audio/visual technology, full-service kitchen, and bar for a dine-in experience.
This project featured multiple challenges throughout its duration, requiring the team to be flexible and adaptable. Some of the challenges were fairly typical, like the close coordination with the owner necessary to keep the balance of the retail center operational during construction. Other challenges were less common, but certainly not unique, like coordinating with three separate design professionals engaged in the project
Of course, this project had some very unique challenges in store as well, including tropical storms, hurricanes, and the global pandemic, which necessitated a ten-month pause during construction. Another unique challenge was associated with erecting tilt-up concrete panels in an airport landing/fly zone, where the complex happens to be located. Extensive site logistics phasing and coordination with the city were required.
No matter what challenge came their way, the WDS team persevered, successfully completing the project once the all-clear to proceed was sounded, allowing construction to resume and ultimately making the Coastland Center a destination once again. This project has been recognized as a Project of Distinction by ABC Wisconsin.
