WDS Construction Earns National Excellence In Construction Award

ABC National EIC Pyramid

WDS Construction, Inc., a Beaver Dam-based general contractor serving 48 states with construction management and development services, was honored by the Associated Builders and Contractors at its annual convention in Grapevine, Texas, on March 10, with the national Excellence in Construction® Pyramid Award.

WDS Construction’s work on Bowlero in Arlington, Va., was selected from entries across the nation and judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

The award-winning, 50,000 square foot bowling and entertainment center was constructed inside a 50-year-old high rise with 13 stories of residential above—and three levels of parking below—the construction site. The project had a limited laydown area due to the site’s location on a major city street, requiring extra coordination and management of even the simplest tasks on a daily basis.

On the building’s interior, WDS faced post-tension cables that could not be compromised during rehab. Constructed during COVID-19, every trade inspection was completed virtually to obtain final Certificate of Occupancy. The completed project features 32 backlit bowling lanes, lounge seating, interactive arcades and high-definition video walls.

“For more than 30 years, ABC has honored award-winning construction projects like Bowlero because the work by the team at WDS exemplifies excellence in our industry,” said 2021 ABC National Chair of the Board of Directors Steve Klessig. “This world-class construction project is a vital part of our economic engine, built safely, and it is an honor to congratulate WDS for their commitment to setting the standard for excellence in construction.”

The winning projects were recognized for their safe and innovative construction process and this year’s review panel included representatives from Building Owners and Managers Association International, Smithsonian Facilities Construction Division, Construction Management Association of America, Engineering News-Record, Design-Build Institute of America, and various construction-related firms nationwide.
